Singing / Voice & Performance Tuition

Mac Francis

As an introduction to the wondrous complexities of the human voice, students will be introduced to important techniques and exercises to help put them on the right path to develop their singing ability and help direct them away from the bad habits that can ruin their voices. Although some of the techniques and exercises are quite complex, it is anticipated that even if some of them are understood and applied, it will be invaluable knowledge to help students along with their singing careers. Singing & Performance technique' and exercises require vast knowledge and experience and even gifted children can jeopardise what they have been blessed with, without the right knowledge. It is therefore without altercation that if a student really wants to be a professional singer, that they undergo intensive singing/voice and performance tuition to help them properly develop and protect their voices.

If you just love to sing and want to learn how to sing properly or if you have any songs you need to learn for a performance or an audition and you would prefer to be taught how best to sing and perform them to the best of your ability, then I would gladly arrange lessons for you.
Wherever possible, you must choose songs that you know and feel you can sing well, I will establish the most suitable key for you to sing them in and use the relevant exercises as mentioned below to help you develop and perform the songs to the best of your ability.
Please, be yourself and do not try to sing like anyone else! If you want to be a tribute performer then so be it, but the music industry/companies are awash with their whoever/whatever's, they don't want/need any more, they are in fact always looking for something/someone new and special!
It is so typical of the vast majority of untrained students to develop bad habits by singing along with their favourite recordings. Remember, your favourite singers are not necessarily good singers and likely did not get where they are because of their singing abilities, so be yourself and I will help you find your own true voice.

PLEASE NOTE: I do not teach pupils to read & write music but encourage all pupils to learn to play an instrument, preferably the piano as a much more preferred means to learn to read and write music. I can recommend competent instrument teachers as required. I do not give students homework, a student will be asked to practice at home whenever it is convenient for them to do so, school or college homework is a priority. I do not enter students into any examinations. There is no hidden or extra costs for the likes of books or equipment, my teaching methods are verbal and practical and do not need the use of books. I provide all what the student' needs for their lessons.

Singing Competitons... Some conventional methods of singing teaching are to incorporate singing competitions at various annual festivals as part of the students' development. I personally did this for many years and was very successful year after year but also found it very stressful and developed a hatred toward it. I feel that students have more than enough stress with their general school learning and homework, without additionally burdening them with the severe stress of singing competitions. I do however, always encourage students to involve themselves with either school shows/plays or outside school shows/plays with various theatre/operatic societies. I can then teach them the appropriate skills to perfect how best to perform their chosen or set pieces for these shows/plays.

Reading & Writing Music... Some parents express their wishes, for their children to learn to read and write music. I must emphasise, I have never claimed to provide this education. Site reading, which is really all that is required for singing is of a much lesser value than completely learning to read and write music whilst learning to play an instrument. So as always, for many beneficial reasons, I always recommend that students learn to play an instrument, preferably the piano as a much more preferred means of learning to read & write music.
